Well - another 6.45am service to start the day off in a really good way. I even tried singing along with some of the hymns in the local language!! I dare say my pronunciation was way off most of the time but they were all too polite to laugh. Perhaps by the end of the ten weeks I’ll be getting to know a few words.
Had time to find my feet around the College today – not that it took long – but it was good to get set up on the internet and browse around in the library. I also spent time with Rev Kondolo who is overseeing my arrangements here just now. We had a good chat about all I would like to try and do here, and also about the practical things like getting around.
Still getting to grips with ablutions. Don’t picture the scene, it’s far too hilarious. It goes like this - one large round basin, two small pots to boil water (many times to even half fill the basin!!!), and then me trying to stand in the basin to do the needful. I really do think I’ll be going the way of my wee Gran and opting for cold water.
Sitting here just before bedtime with different sounds all around me - I can hear Christian music, lots of laughter and the overriding sound of sirens from the copper mines and the massive lorries that thunder to and from them, sounding their horns. The noise they make is incredible. In some ways it reminds me of the noise the big trains in America and Canada made as they rolled along. The mines are very dominant here and one of the striking sights as we made our way through Kitwe was the most massive slag heap imaginable. There goes another lorry….they are rolling along every few minutes. And I’m sure I can hear trains too now. Must find out if there is a railway for the mines nearby.
