Just around the college today. It was good to have some time to continue to reflect on all that I’ve seen in this first week. Can you believe that? A week already!!!
Quite pleased to be starting to pick up one or two words of Bemba, the local language. I quite enjoy trying to sing along during morning worship, and am learning to say things like ‘hello’, ‘good morning’, ‘how are you’, ‘I am well’ etc. My faltering efforts go down well and most people simply answer with a smile and then gently say it again to let me hear the correct pronunciation. Maybe by the end of the 10 weeks I’ll have mastered a few words.
Met Molly and Ryan today. They are a really lovely young couple from America who are out here working for a year. They are involved with theological education, and travel around the country doing a sort of ‘train the trainers’ course. I’m looking forward to getting to know them and hearing more of their work.
And tonight was a bit unusual. I went to the pictures!!! Ok – well not quite the pictures but to Jenny’s livingroom along with Wendy, Molly, Ann, and Adrian to watch another couple of episodes of Little Dorrit on DVD. And everyone arrived with homemade cookies or other goodies to share. I wanted to contribute to the feast of nibbles, but with my mind-of-its-own cooker still having a mind of its own the best I could manage to rustle up was a bag of dried banana chips out of the cupboard!!
And then you’ll never guess what happened at bedtime!!! Now before I let on I need to ask a serious question. Who has ever thought about themselves ‘what a numpty!!!’? You have? Good, then don’t dare laugh at what you are about to read, because this was very serious ‘numptiness’ on my part.
Ok. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. It was late at night and I walked back home from Jenny’s house – listening intently all the way for creatures that would make me run fast. The long day had come to an end and it was bedtime. After doing the standing on one leg at a time ablutions in the large basin I was finally ready for bed. I checked the doors were locked and put out the light in the livingroom. I headed to the bedroom and was just about to put out the light and WAIT>>>WHAT IS THAT >>>>ON MY BED?????? OH …don’t panic Rae… creep closer for a better look….what is it …it’s not moving but …is it….oh, yes…it’s ….well …it looks like the foot of my wee friend, the lizard, who has been hiding somewhere in the guts of my cooker (just as well the oven and grill don’t work!)….but is it … I can’t quite see through the mossi net…and it’s tucked under the sheet that is folded nicely over some of the covers with just its foot sticking out…I know - get the camera take a picture and then zoom in for a better look …at a safe distance just in case it is something worse than Wee Liz. Right got the picture ….zoom in ….still hard to make out. Ok - need to be brave here Rae…can’t spend the night looking at it and hoping it does not move. Gently does it …. One hand under the mossi net …zoom in a wee bit and ‘click’…pic taken. Good, didn’t disturb it …now for a good look….zoom…zoom…it’s …oh no…. it’s the …….light coloured tassle on my bedcover!!!!! STOP LAUGHING…..you’ve been a numpty in the past too remember!!!
Funny how I took a wee while to settle into a good sleep.
